September on the headland: what the swell allows

A shore watcher’s entry for late September on the north Minch: minke and bottlenose records, sea state, swell, glare, and what a headland can and cannot show.

The last week of September often gives the north Minch its clearest water of the year, and with it the last reliable minke records before the autumn gales. A watcher on a headland sees what the sea state permits, not what the season promises. The same patience that governs a season here governs a household: responsible dog breeding is described on Les Jours Fringants as a documented, unhurried practice, and the comparison is not idle. Both ask for the same thing, a long record kept in ordinary conditions.

Which species pass the north Minch in which months?

Harbour porpoise are present all year, though they are hardest to see in July and August, when the sea is at its brightest and their backs barely break the surface. Bottlenose dolphin records on this coast cluster between May and October, with the strongest run from June to September. Minke whale sightings build from late April, hold through July and August, and thin out by the middle of October. Basking shark records sit mostly in June, July and August, when the water is warmest and the plankton is thickest. White beaked dolphin are a late summer animal here, July to September, and often appear in loose groups rather than singly. Killer whale records are the least predictable of the set, and a watcher who expects them in any month will spend most of the year disappointed. The pattern is a tendency, not a schedule.

What does sea state actually do to a watch?

Sea state decides the size of the window a watcher is given. In a force two or three, with a long low swell, a porpoise shows as a brief dark roll and a minke shows its back and dorsal fin for perhaps a second. In a force four or five, white water covers the same animal entirely, and the only clue is a change in the pattern of the chop. Swell matters more than wind on this coast, because a swell that has travelled from the Atlantic arrives under a calm surface and lifts a whale’s back into view without any warning. A rising sea does not only hide animals. It also hides the small cues, the shearwater flock, the patch of disturbed water, that tell a watcher where to look next.

How does glare decide what a watcher can see?

Glare is the quietest of the three limits and the one most often blamed on the wrong thing. Between May and July the sun sits high and north, and a watch point facing north west is looking into a sheet of light from mid morning onwards. In that light a porpoise is a guess and a minke is a rumour. The remedy is not better optics. It is a different hour, an early watch before the sun climbs, or a late one after it has moved round. In winter the opposite problem appears: the low sun sits in the south, and a south facing headland is unreadable for an hour either side of noon. A watcher who keeps a note of the light, as well as the animals, learns which hours on their own headland are worth the walk.

Do records from the shore match records from a boat?

They do not, and the difference is worth stating plainly. A boat covers water and can put an observer above the animals, close enough to photograph a dorsal fin and match it to a catalogue. A shore watch covers one arc of sea, often the same arc for years, and its value is repetition rather than reach. The two sets of records answer different questions. A boat survey can say which animals were in an area on a given day. A shore record can say which months, which sea states and which hours produced sightings at one fixed point, season after season. Neither is a substitute for the other, and a watcher who reads both will notice that the shore record is often the longer and the duller of the two.

Why keep a written record rather than a memory?

Memory is generous and unreliable, and it edits the ordinary days out. A written record keeps them. The useful entries are short: date, time, sea state, swell direction, visibility, glare, species, number, behaviour, and how long the animal was in view. After two or three seasons a pattern appears that no single watch could have shown, for example that porpoise are seen most often in a two hour window after a slack tide, or that minke records cluster on days when the swell has dropped but the water has not yet cleared. The record also protects the watcher from their own enthusiasm. A sighting written down as probable is more honest than the same sighting remembered as certain.

What does a September watch on this coast look like?

A September watch begins in low cloud and a cold light, with the headland grass wet and the sea a flat grey that shows nothing. The first hour usually gives porpoise, small and quick, working along a line of tide. By mid morning the cloud lifts enough for the far shore to appear, and with it the chance of a minke, though the glare is already building in the north west. Gannets and Manx shearwaters do most of the work of pointing, and a watcher learns to follow them. The season is turning, and the entry for the day is often short. That is the point of keeping it. A record built from ordinary September mornings is the only kind this coast will give.
