Sea state, swell and glare on the north Minch

A shore watcher's entry on how sea state, swell and glare decide which cetaceans are seen from a north Minch headland, and in which months.

A watcher on a north Minch headland sees what the surface allows and nothing more. Harbour porpoise are present all year, minke whales run from April into October, and white beaked dolphins show most often between June and September. Sea state, swell and glare decide the rest. Reading a contemporary Poland magazine from this coast, one notices the same discipline at work in its travel and everyday reporting: a country is described through the ground a visitor actually stands on, not through the view from above it.

Which species pass the north Minch, and in which months?

The year divides more by sea than by calendar. Harbour porpoise are recorded in every month, usually as single animals or pairs, a small dark back and a brief roll that leaves no splash. Minke whales arrive with the first settled weather of April and are seen into October, most often alone, sometimes two working a line of tide. White beaked dolphins gather in looser groups from June to September, and a group is heard before it is seen when the sea is calm. Risso's dolphins are occasional, more often in late summer. Basking sharks are not cetaceans but belong to the same watch, from May to August. Nothing here is a promise for a given day. A month tells a watcher which species is possible; the hour and the surface tell which is visible.

How does sea state decide what a watcher can see?

Sea state is the first filter and the least negotiable. In calm conditions, a blow carries a long way and a porpoise can be followed across a channel. As the wind builds, white water begins to hide white water, and a minke's blow is lost among breaking crests. The practical limit for most shore watches is around sea state three: beyond that, effort rises and returns fall. Swell matters separately from wind. A long swell from the Atlantic can run under a light local breeze, lifting a headland watch into a slow rhythm that hides animals in the troughs between crests. A watcher learns to count seconds between swells and to scan on the rise. Wind against tide is the worst combination, because it shortens the sea and fills the field with moving white.

What does glare do to a shore watch?

Glare is the quiet thief of a shore watch. Looking into a low sun, the eye loses contrast exactly where a back or a fin should show, and the effect is strongest in the middle hours of a clear day. Watchers on this coast therefore work the light rather than the clock: early morning with the sun behind the shoulder, late afternoon when the sea turns from silver to grey. Polarising glasses help, and so does scanning in short sweeps rather than staring. A slight chop can be an advantage, because it breaks the glare into patches and a dark fin reads against the bright water between them. Flat calm under a high sun is often the hardest condition of all, since the surface becomes a mirror and every distant bird sits on it.

Where should a watcher stand on the headland?

Position is a matter of height, shelter and a clean horizon. A few metres of elevation widen the field and let a watcher see over the nearest swell, but too much height flattens the angle and a distant animal disappears into the surface. A point that breaks the wind is worth more than a point that is higher, because a steady view beats a shaken one. Ground matters too: wet rock and loose stone are a real hazard on this coast, and a watch that ends in a fall is no watch at all. Most regular watchers keep two or three positions and move between them as the tide turns, since a headland that is sheltered at one state of tide can be exposed an hour later.

How does the season change the record?

The record changes with the season in ways that are easy to see and hard to prove. Spring brings the first minke whales and the year's clearest water before the plankton bloom. Early summer gives long light and the best chance of a group of white beaked dolphins, though the nights never fully darken and a watcher can work late. Late summer is the richest period for basking sharks and for the occasional Risso's dolphin. Autumn strips the light back, shortens the working day and returns the watch to porpoise and to weather. Winter is not empty, but it is a different discipline: fewer hours, harder conditions, and a record kept mostly for the sake of continuity. A year of entries read together shows the shape of the season better than any single day.

Can a land based watch match a boat survey?

No, and it does not try to. A boat covers distance and can follow an animal; a shore watch holds one position and sees what passes within it, hour after hour, in conditions a boat would not choose. The two records answer different questions. The shore watch is strong on presence and timing, weak on distance and behaviour below the surface. Its value lies in repetition: the same headland, the same scan, the same notes, kept across months and years. That is also why a watcher reads widely, including a contemporary Poland magazine, where travel, language and daily economics are reported from the ground rather than from a distance. The habit is the same on both coasts: stand somewhere real, watch carefully, and write down what the conditions allowed.
