The best months for watching from a north Minch headland run from late April to early September, when the water is at its calmest and the daylight is longest. Which species pass the north Minch, and when?
The harbour porpoise is present all year, and it is the animal a shore watcher is most likely to record, though its small dorsal fin and brief roll make it easy to miss in any chop. Common dolphins arrive in numbers from June, often in groups that move fast and break the surface in a line. Bottlenose dolphins are recorded in every month, but sightings cluster between May and September, and they tend to work close to headlands and channel edges. Minke whales are a summer visitor, most often logged from May to September, feeding on sandeel grounds over the shelf. White beaked dolphins favour deeper water and appear in the record mainly from July to October. Basking sharks are not cetaceans, but they are logged here from May to August when the sea is flat and their fins are visible at distance. Risso's dolphins and killer whales are occasional, and a single entry in the log can carry a whole month.
How sea state decides what a headland can show
Sea state is the first filter on any watch. In a flat calm, a porpoise surfacing two hundred metres out leaves a small disturbance that the eye can follow, and a minke's blow is visible as a low puff that hangs for a second. As the wind rises and whitecaps begin to break, that same animal becomes invisible, because the surface is already full of the shapes the watcher is searching for. The Beaufort scale is the practical measure: at force 2 and below, a shore watch is worth the walk, at force 3 the record becomes patchy, and at force 4 and above the effort is better spent on other work. The wind direction matters as much as its strength. An offshore wind flattens the near water and can open a window of clear viewing close in, while an onshore wind builds a chop that hides everything beyond a few hundred metres.
What swell does to a sighting, and why it is not the same as wind
Swell is the second filter, and it is often confused with sea state. Swell is the long, organised movement that arrives from weather systems far away, sometimes under a light local wind and a blue sky. A swell of a metre or more lifts and drops the whole surface in a slow rhythm, and a small cetacean surfacing in the trough is hidden for the seconds that matter. On a headland the effect is worse than it looks from the map, because the watcher is looking down at an angle and the swell line crosses the field of view. The record shows that days of low swell and light wind produce most of the entries, and that a heavy swell can persist for a day or two after the wind that raised it has gone. Reading the swell forecast before the walk is as useful as reading the wind.
How glare and light change the record through the day
Glare is the third filter, and it is the one a watcher can plan around. Looking east in the morning or west in the evening puts the sun on the water, and the reflected light breaks the surface into a sheet of white that hides fins and blows alike. The middle of the day, with the sun high, gives the most even light and the clearest reading of the surface, though it also flattens contrast. Under low cloud the sea turns a uniform grey and a dark fin stands out well against it, which is why many of the best entries in this journal are dated on overcast days. Rain reduces visibility at distance but can calm the surface, and a light drizzle with no wind is often worth an hour on the headland.
How long does a first long journey need?

A first journey to a distant destination is usually built around ten days to two weeks, because travel days at each end and the need to reach the right ground take their share. On this coast the equivalent is a stay of a week or more, so that a run of poor sea state does not empty the record. A single afternoon on a headland can produce a minke and a group of common dolphins, but it can also produce nothing, and the log is honest about both. Time is the one variable a watcher controls.
What a first itinerary looks like, read from the shore
A first itinerary, whether it crosses an ocean or follows a coastline, is built the same way: a small number of places, each given enough days to be read properly. A first journey to Japan, for example, is often shaped around two or three centres rather than a long list, because the travel between them costs more time than the map suggests. The same holds here. A watcher who tries to cover five headlands in three days sees less than one who returns to the same point at the same tide for a week. The record favours repetition: the same ground, the same light, the same hour, until the surface becomes familiar and the unusual stands out. That is the whole method of a shore watch, and it travels well.
